What is Drilling?

Drilling is the process of cutting a hole using a sharpened, spinning drill bit. As the bit is rotated and pushed against the part’s surface, chips and swarf are removed. When drilling holes in metals, coolant is often used to reduce heat accumulation, maintain accuracy and extend tool life. Peck drilling, or repeatedly driving the drill bit partially through the workpiece and then retracting it to the surface, is commonly used when drilling deep holes using a CNC mill as it aids in swarf removal.
